December 14 – Appreciate What’s the one thing you have come to appreciate most in the past year? How do you express gratitude for it?
Of course I appreciate my amazing husband and my adorable kids. And I really appreciate my comfortable house and my new car. Oh, and you’ve heard me say dozens of times how thankful I am to have my new job. I’ll stop short of saying I’m thankful for our cats–because they almost killed my friend Erin Saturday night (no, no, a cat didn’t attack her; it was allergies. Poor Erin was very polite about the whole thing).
But what have I come to appreciate most in the past year? Our schedule.
More and more, I appreciate our family’s schedule. I love that by 4:30 every weekday, John is home with the kids and by 6:00 we are all sitting at the table together eating dinner. I love that we have every single weekend to do as we please. I love that over Christmas break the five of us will have 13 straight days to relax and have fun together. Most of all, I love that this summer, while they could be in a daycare program, instead my kids will be with their Daddy all day long–at the pool, at the park, or in the back yard. I love our schedule.
Of course our schedule would not be possible if John was not a teacher. In many families, Dad is not available much of the time. I have always been thankful to have a husband who doesn’t work long hours (except when he was a soccer coach–that sucked!), who doesn’t need to travel for business, and who gets to spend time with us during scheduled breaks. But I am even more aware of how awesome our schedule is now that I’m working myself. It means I don’t have to stress out about where my kids will go on a snow day (they’re with John!), and it means I don’t have to rush out of my office to get home to relieve the babysitter (because again, they’re with John!).
It’s a relaxing, wonderful schedule and I’m very thankful. In fact, right now I am making plans to express gratitude for my schedule over Christmas break. It will involve relaxing with a glass of bourbon every evening and sleeping in every morning. I’ll check back in January 3rd at 5:30 a.m. and let you know if I’m still feeling grateful…
