Food Revolution

I had a bad headache yesterday afternoon, so I did something I rarely do and laid down on the couch to rest and flip through television channels (there are only 5, so it’s not as much fun as it sounds). Usually I’m more of an Ellen girl, but Oprah had Ryan Seacrest and Chef Jamie Oliver as her guests, talking about this new reality show they’ve produced together, Food Revolution.  Now, most people know that I am not the best role model when it comes to healthy eating, but I have to admit I was intrigued by Jamie Oliver and what he had to say.  So much so, that later on last night John and I watched the premier episode of Food Revolution where we joined in the revulsion of every other human who saw him grind up chicken gristle to demonstrate how those “yummy” nuggets are made.  Sure made me wish I had not swiped one off Cate’s plate earlier in the day. (Disclaimer: I have no idea how the big McD actually makes their nuggets)

One particular meal that Jamie Oliver demonstrated on the show had John claiming that he could “almost taste it,” and we agreed to try it for dinner as soon as possible. This led to a lively discussion of what other disgusting foods we have been consuming, and a plan to investigate Good Foods or Whole Foods or whatever it’s called. John pointed out that our kids are still young enough to “save” and I’m hoping that for John and I the healthy eating might offset some of the damage we’ve done with the Wellers. (Another disclaimer: I serve my family a home cooked dinner, not from a box, almost every night and I pack my kids’ lunches every day, including a reusable water bottle, so it’s not like I’m completely devoid of health consciousness. I’m just sayin’)

This morning was our ‘field trip’ to Good Foods, where we paraded all our children up and down the aisles, gently encouraging them to try the free samples because it was near lunch time and God knows I’m lazy enough to take an opportunity to get out of making their lunch when I see it. We saw several things we normally buy, plus a few items we could swap out for a healthier version for around the same price. The exception was in the produce section, where I felt the options were extremely limited and so expensive that I had to wonder if the price included Jamie Oliver actually cooking them for me. For today’s trip, we decided to buy only the ingredients for the Stir Fry Chicken recipe we saw on tv last night, plus some whole grain bread for lunch.

$30 dollars later we left with enough food to last our family for the next 2 hours. Mentally, I ran through our options: we could take out a second mortgage and continue to eat this way; we could limit the “good” food to only certain family members and thereby also conduct a science experiment for the good of the medical community (the book deal alone might make this worthwhile), or we could formulate a new plan that included buying some of the all natural products at Good Foods but continue to do the bulk of our shopping at Disco Kroger.

We decided to think it over with a turkey sandwich on our new whole grain bread. But first–we had to swing by Kroger for some deli turkey.

p.s. Cate noted that the organic grape jelly tastes “just like the stuff in the big jar” and we are all looking forward to our all natural Chicken Stir Fry for dinner tonight.  This will be a work in progress…
